Chairman’s Fitness Challenge 2017

 

Happy New Year! With the holidays behind us and the New Year ahead of us, many are making New Year’s resolutions. More often than not, those resolutions include changing the way we eat or exercise or both! With that in mind, the Third Quarter Chairman’s Fitness Challenge, is about to begin. As you make your resolutions for 2017, resolve to include goals for a healthier lifestyle this year.

In keeping with the Rocky Balboa theme, the third quarter challenge, “Don’t let Adrian tell you, ‘You can’t Win’!” will be a six-week challenge with a goal of 275 points per week for each participating employee. This is a 25 point increase from the 2nd quarter challenge. Mr. Collier has approved administrative leave for every employee who completes the challenge in its entirety. The challenge begins Monday, April 17, 2017, and ends Sunday, May 28, 2017.

Don’t forget, Chairman Wainwright is encouraging employees to participate in the special Gold and Platinum challenges as well. He has set a weekly minimum goal of 1,000 points for himself and is challenging those who can to aim even higher and join the Chairman’s Special Platinum Challenge for achieving 2,500 points each week. A special recognition will be given to those who meet these goals each week of the challenge.

Registration for WSD Employees for the third quarter challenge begins April 10, 2017.

Rules for the challenge are as follows:

  1. Employees must sign up on the WSD Intranet website from April 10 through April 13, 2017.
  2. Participants should report their total weekly points by the end of the day each Monday for the duration of the challenge, but be flexible. If you have employees, that because of their schedule, because of leave, or due to some other unforeseeable situation, are unable to turn in weekly points by the due date, take their points when they provide them and send an amended email to Heidi Leonard with the updated total. In order to successfully complete the second quarter challenge, participants must report 275 points per week.
  3. Participants may use any of the physical activities listed on the 2017 exercise equivalents chart in order to earn the required 275 points per week minimum. Only the physical activities listed on the chart will count toward an employee’s weekly points, but remember to be creative! For example, if an employee climbs stairs at their job every day they may use that as part of the climbing activity to assist them in getting their points for the week.

Counseling, Testing and Records

WSD employs certified counselors to provide a comprehensive guidance program. The counselors provide program information to potential students and enroll eligible students in appropriate educational programs. Counselors maintain career information centers, provide career guidance activities, and assist offenders with the development of career path plans to enable them to make informed educational and occupational choices. In addition, counselors coordinate the administration of standardized educational achievement tests and coordinate and administer the GED tests. They also assist students in developing problem solving skills, communication skills, self-awareness, and stress coping abilities.

Tests of Adult Basic Education (TABE) are administered to all incoming TDCJ offenders to determine each offender’s educational level. In addition, offenders enrolled in WSD academic programs are tested periodically throughout the school year to monitor student progress. Offenders also participate in an assessment of vocational aptitude and interest prior to enrollment in Career and Technical Education programs.

Windham serves as a testing center for the General Educational Development (GED) program.

Operational Support directs and manages initiatives to support the district’s mission.  The department has direct oversight of WSD Counseling, Testing and Records Department, compliance and operational reviews, attendance policies, campus planning and development and coordination of ITP guidelines.  The department also oversees district and student achievement reporting, program evaluation and records retention.  Operational Support coordinates internal and external research and serves as the educational liaison to private prisons, parole and American Correctional Association (ACA) initiatives.  The Recreation program and the Radio and Television Department are also under the supervision of the Department.
