High School diploma from an accredited High School or hold a GED. Salary based on Non-Certification or Certification as defined by the State Board for Educator Certification (SBEC). Certification levels I and II are based on the recommended levels from the Texas Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Board for the Evaluation of Interpreters (BEI).
A minimum of one year of full-time, wage-earning experience in general clerical/secretarial duties or interpreter responsibilities. Must be able to communicate in a professional manner. General knowledge of language development preferred. Knowledge of deaf culture and ability to interact with the deaf community preferred.
Provide voice to sign and sign to voice interpretive services in an educational setting utilizing appropriate forms of sign languages. Performs duties in support of assisting students in educational achievement. Interpret classroom, administrative, and social interaction communications as appropriate for students and staff. Provide assistance to teacher in preparing and using instructional materials. Assist and score objective measurement instruments. Assist in working with groups and individual students. Prepare instructional aids including displays and mock-ups. Assist with operation and use of educational media. Assist in testing routines. Under close supervision, serve as a substitute during brief absence of the certified teacher. Interpret for deaf offenders during admission, review and dismissal committee meetings. Execute duties in a professional ethical, and responsible manner as defined in 19 TAC Chapter 247, Code of Ethics and standard practices for Texas Educators. Adapt the Code of Ethics (Texas Board For The Evaluation of Interpreters or Registry of Interpreters) for an educational setting.
