2014 MEDIA HONOR ROLL includes J.T Street/Fox News

(Austin) --J.T. Street of Fox 29 News was named to the 2014 Media Honor Roll, a program sponsored by the Texas Association of School Boards (TASB), and by the Windham School District (WSD) and its Board of Trustees.  The Media Honor Roll recognizes media representatives statewide for fair and balanced reporting of news about public schools.  Media representatives from more than 380 Texas newspapers, radio and television stations, along with online publications, have been honored by their local school districts.

Street featured WSD Excellence in Teaching Award winner Joe Pine in a segment of Fox 29 San Antonio's "Street's Corner" series: "Teacher of the Year." Pine teaches offenders at the Dominguez State Jail in San Antonio.

Criteria for the selection includes the media representative’s efforts to get to know the superintendent and the district’s mission and goals; report school news in a fair, accurate, and balanced manner; give a high profile to positive news about schools; visit the schools; and maintain a policy of no surprises by sharing information with school officials.

“We appreciate Mr. Street's balanced and accurate approach to sharing the challenges facing correctional educators and the successes achieved by WSD students within the Texas Department of Criminal Justice," WSD Superintendent Dr. Clint Carpenter said.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott has proclaimed October 2017 as “Principals Month” in Texas. Across the nation, states are taking the time to thank principals for their dedication to creating student success and school safety. Windham School District principals are no exception!

Employment Opportunities and Free Bonding Services

The TWC Fidelity Bonding service helps at-risk job applicants including ex-offenders get and keep a job. TWC and the Workforce Development Boards offer free fidelity bonding services to reduce employers' concerns about hiring at-risk job applicants who cannot be bonded through other sources. Annual Performance Report SY15 (014-2015)

This is an exciting time to be part of Windham School District (WSD)!

We invite you to be a part of what is happening to change lives for those wanting a second chance after a past of criminal activity. Every day, more people join our efforts to change the lives of those incarcerated in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. “New teachers apply for jobs, volunteers sign up to devote time and some offer free short courses, businesses inquire about hiring students on release, and many charitable service and faith-based organizations ask to partner with WSD.” Many Texans are now interested in how they can become a part of our collective effort, making Windham’s goals part of their personal mission. We are hearing these people proudly state, “We are Windham,” expressing solidarity with our common mission to facilitate positive change.

Windham’s past performance is ranked as one of the highest in the nation among correctional educational programs, but we know we must continue to improve and challenge ourselves to deliver the best opportunities for offenders to be successful upon release back into Texas communities. Windham takes pride in past performance, but I hope you can also see our efforts to be responsive to needed changes. Our staff of highly qualified and dedicated people is rising to the challenges of educating the offender population in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. By improving educational content delivery, expanding vocational training opportunity for offenders, improving behavior and choice training for offenders, connecting with businesses who employ released offenders and continually working to improve efficiencies, Windham is providing a cost-effective intervention that helps protect all fellow Texans and lowers the cost of criminal activity to the State.

Why teach offenders in Windham School District? - "Correctional education is important because someday these guys are going to be my neighbors. They are somebody's child, somebody's father, and somebody's brother. We need to help them get there. They are going to be back in society, and I want them to be productive citizens. … so I need to help them -- or we need to help them – I can't do anything by myself. I expect my students to learn respect, empathy and the ability to succeed."
