Industry employers partner with WSD to provide increased job opportunities
Windham School District continues to build valuable partnerships with industry employers, according to a recent report by WSD Superintendent Dr. Clint Carpenter to the WSD Board of Trustees. He said WSD was excited to meet with major employers earlier this year, paving the way for additional opportunities for residents to be hired after release from incarceration. WSD representatives have invited these employers to tour WSD Career and Technical Education classes to see first-hand the skills taught and trades supported by Windham. They are able to speak with teachers and students and offer suggestions for improvement in training.
Representatives of Bechtel Corporation, Quinco Electrical Contractors and Greater Texas Landscape Services met with Windham staff. Carpenter said senior corporate representatives were very impressed with the training Windham provides and agreed to work with WSD and the Texas Department of Criminal Justice to hire released residents for projects throughout the state.
All three companies have followed up with requests for applications from residents being released. Carpenter said he anticipates many current positions being staffed by these companies to be filled by former TDCJ residents. These jobs are career entry level positions, paying $12-$18 per hour, with potential advancement opportunities for the employee.
Carpenter said he appreciates these companies and their leadership showing support for former residents seeking employment and careers, and he thanked the companies for their valuable support of WSD and TDCJ.
"These employers make a difference in the lives of former residents and Texas by sharing their time and expertise to partner with us. They are willing to give former residents a second chance at life success! We are eager to learn the expectations of our business partners and provide them with highly-skilled, job-ready employees."
