A graduation celebration was recently held in the Chapel of Faith at the Stringfellow Unit in Rosharon, thanks to coordinated efforts of Windham School District at the Terrell, Ramsey and Stringfellow units.

Stringfellow Unit WSD High School Equivalency (HSE) graduates are (front row, l. to r.) R. Everjoel, J. Ramirez, J. Castro, (back row, l. to r.) M. Mitchell, S. Espino, J. Packer, D. Jarvis, J. Bertrand, and (not shown) C. Whitaker, J. Aleman, M. Ralvan, R. Esquive, F. Marrufo, G. Sanders, H. Medina, T. Wells, C. Sonnier and C. Manjares.

Fifteen students from the participating units received High School Equivalency (HSE) certificates of completion, after passing final exams in reading and language arts, math, science and social studies. Along with the GED recipients, WSD also graduated 54 students from Career and Technical Education (CTE) courses. These courses are based on real-world technical work environments, with curricula meeting current industry standards and practices.

CTE studies also include the integration of Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS), offering most graduates the opportunity to earn an industry-recognized occupational certificate or license. Each unit offers nationally recognized trade-specific courses such as Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) and the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER).

"An student reduces his chance of recidivism 27 percent when completing two trade vocations," noted WSD workforce and industry liaison Rex Rhone. "Upon completion of one or more of these vocations, an student can be added to the Windham digital application website. This application can be progressively updated by the applicant once he is paroled. More importantly, it is available for prospective employers looking to hire job specific skills and experience."

Terrell Unit WSD HSE graduates are M. Iakopo, W. Nichols, D. Brown, J. Teal and J. Turnage.

The types of Windham CTE courses offered varies from one TDCJ unit to another. Residents who want information about vocational career opportunities should contact the WSD counselor at their facility.
